Behavioral Interventions for Boys & Girls

The Therapeutic Foster Care Program (TFC) at Alabama Clinical Schools is a community-based program that provides interventions to boys and girls in state custody and unable to live at home due to emotional, behavioral and mental health issues. Our foster care caseworkers and parents work to deliver mental health treatment services in a therapeutic foster home environment. Our trained foster parents and staff collaborate with the child, their family, and the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) to meet the child’s individual treatment needs and work towards the child’s return to a lower level of care.

Year-round schooling is an integral part of this broader intensive outpatient program. We offer onsite education with special education teachers who provide students with appropriate accommodations that meet their specific needs and academic goals. Learn more about Educational Programming.

Program Admission Criteria

Children in the TFC Program have typically not responded well to less restrictive environments due to the severity of their emotional or behavioral problems. We offer treatment for boys and girls whose primary therapeutic needs are varied and do not include sexually inappropriate behaviors.

The TFC Program serves boys and girls who:

  • Are ages 6 through 21
  • Have an IQ of 55 or above
  • Have a mental health diagnosis
  • Have identified moderate emotional and/or behavioral problems
  • Need the structure of a therapeutic foster care placement
  • Must be in the state’s custody and/or unable to live at home
